Connecting Metric Trees to Measures for Submeasures

Connecting calculated or related metrics to a measure in a plan allows you to build a sub-measure hierarchy, giving you a structured view of how individual measures are coming together depending on how you created the Metric Tree. By linking these metrics as sub-measures, you can track performance at both high and detailed levels, making it easier to understand what's driving success—or where attention is needed.

You can only report on the top level measure - this can be either the parent of the submeasure or it can be a child submeasure only if it's aligned to an objective in a different plan.

Connecting a Metric Tree to a Measure

Whether you have a related metric or a calculated metric, they follow the same steps to connect it to a measure in a plan. You will want to have the parent measure already existing in the plan and connect it to the parent metric of the metric tree you have already created by clicking the measure > Edit > tracking via Metric Library > select the parent metric. From here you will need to create the measures for all the child metrics so they can all exist in the plan.

If you have a calculated metric that has 'sum of', ensure that the tracking targets of the child measures add up to the target of the parent measure

For example: In the Metric tree, Total Revenue represents the parent of the calculated metric which sums up the total from each of its children, Revenue from APAC, Revenue from EMEA and Revenue from NAMER

In the Plan, Achieve global revenue represents the parent measure, in which we will add 'Total Revenue' Metric to its tracking and click Save.

Once saved, you will notice you can open up the measure using the down arrow to show the hierarchy. It's important to note that the child metrics are showing as green because in this current state, they only exist as metrics and we will need to create a measure for each of them

Once the measures have been created, no further action is needed. In this example, each region (child measure) has its own target, adjusted manually using the slider. These regional measures are summed up to show the total progress of the parent measure, Achieve global revenue.

If the child measures are connected to a metric source through an integration, they will automatically update in the plan according to the settings in the metric library

If you are wanting to align any of the child measures to an objective that lives in a different plan, this is when you can click on "Align to goal" and select the objective. In this example, we will align the child measure Revenue from NAMER to an objective in the NAMER Plan, Achieve NAMER revenue:

Once you click 'Confirm', you'll notice that the measure shows up linked in the hierarchy as a child measure:

And in the NAMER plan, the same measure appears directly under the objective:

The same applies for Related metrics - To keep in mind is that related metrics are all tracked independently irrespective of hierarchal structure.
